SALT LAKE CITY- The University of Utah women's swimming and diving team defeated the New Mexico Lobos 134-99 on Friday. Utah improves to 3-4 overall and 3-1 in the Mountain West Conference, while the Lobos fall to 4-5 overall, 2-3 MWC.
In an all around team effort, the Utes finished first in nine of the 13 events. Freshman Loren Sweny took top honors in the 200 free (1:54.79) and the 200 back (2:08.38). Neringa Statkeviciute finished first in two events, the 50 free (24.00) and the 500 free (5:05.92). Senior Courtney McKinney won the 200 IM (2:07.58) and the 100 free (53.17). Kristen Kaiser finished first in the 1000 free with a time of 10:28.15, almost 10 seconds ahead of the next competitor. Melissa Chamberlin edged out fellow Ute Renee Dyer in the 200 breast with a time of 2:24.18, compared to Dyer's 2:25.87.
"It is always great to win a conference meet," said head coach Mike Litzinger. "New Mexico has a great team and I am proud of the way our kids performed tonight. This is a nice win for us."
