SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah's women's tennis team finishes with another impressive victory over Air Force, 4-3. Air Force was the Utes first conference match of the season. This win put Utah 1-0 in conference play and improved their season record to 2-0.
In singles action, freshman Ellen Svensson finished on top after a grueling match with Air Force's Laura Nigro. Svennson defeated Nigro, 5-7, 6-2, 7-6. Utah's Sheri Esrock defeated Gina Black, 6-1, 6-0. Cassie Kasteler swept by Kelli O'Bryant, 6-0, 6-0. Freshman Allison Hansen defeated Kristen Jones, 6-1, 6-1. Hilary Doyle also finished strong after defeating Miclynn Crail, 8-4.
In doubles action, Ronnberg and Esrock were victorious over O'Bryant and Crail, 8-2. Svenssen and Kasteler had their problems as they fell to Brooke Parsons and Nigro, 8-3. Hansen and Kotoglou couldn't quite finish it out as they were defeated by Heather Shelby and Black, 8-6.
The Utes will resume play Friday, Jan. 25 at 5:00 p.m. This regular season match will be against in-state rival Weber State. "The Wildcats are a very good team and we're going to have to come to play if we want to win," says head coach John Tsumas. This duel match will be held at the Eccles Tennis Center.
