THIS WEEK: The University of Utah men's and women's swimming and diving teams will face Wyoming on Thursday in Laramie, Wyo., and Air Force on Saturday in Colorado Springs, Colo. The Ute women are 4-4 overall and 3-2 in the Mountain West Conference. The men are 1-2 overall, 0-2 MWC.
NEW MEXICO RECAP: The women's swimming and diving team defeated the New Mexico Lobos 134-99 on Friday.
In an all around team effort, the Utes finished first in nine of the 13 events. Freshman Loren Sweny took top honors in the 200 free (1:54.79) and the 200 back (2:08.38). Neringa Statkeviciute finished first in two events, the 50 free (24.00) and the 500 free (5:05.92). Senior Courtney McKinney won the 200 IM (2:07.58) and the 100 free (53.17). Kristen Kaiser finished first in the 1000 free with a time of 10:28.15, almost 10 seconds ahead of the next competitor. Melissa Chamberlin edged out fellow Ute Renee Dyer in the 200 breast with a time of 2:24.18, compared to Dyer's 2:25.87.
COLORADO STATE RECAP: The Ute women's swimming team fell to the Colorado State Rams on Saturday by a score of 122-121.
In a well fought effort by both teams, Utah took a 115-111 lead into the final and deciding event. Courtney McKinney, Rebecca Gerber, Neringa Statkeviciute and Melissa Young competed in the 200 free relay for the Utes, but came up just 32-hundredths of a second short of Colorado State's Lyndsey Carlaw, Kristen Knudson, Katie Peck and Kelly Sullivan.
Overall, Utah took top honors in eight of the 13 events. Kristen Kaiser won the 1000 free (10:37.53), almost five seconds ahead of the next competitor, and the 500 free (5:12.66). Senior Courtney McKinney, in her final home meet, finished first in the 200 IM by setting a Utah school record time of 2:07.46. Neringa Statkeviciute finished first in the 50 free (24.25) and the 100 free (51.60). The Utes dominated the 200 free with Loren Sweny finishing first (1:54.88), Renee Dyer taking second (1:55.34) and Kaiser finishing third (1:55.36).
UTE NOTES: Cody Rempfer was named MWC Men's Swimmer of the Week on Oct. 24. Rempfer set a Colorado State Early Bird Invitational record in the 200 fly (1:52.87). ... Loren Sweny set a Utah school record in the 200 back (2:05.27) against Oregon State. ... Neringa Statkeviciute is second on the Utah top performances list in the 100 free, posting a time of 51.26 against BYU. Statkeviciute has finished first in the 100 free in six of the seven meets she has competed in the event. She also ranks fourth on the Ute top performances list in 50 free (23.85), winning the event three out of the last four meets.
