THIS WEEK: The University of Utah Swimming and Diving teams will travel to Seattle, Wash., to take on the Washington Huskies in a non-conference meet. The meet will be held at 1 p.m. (PST). The Ute women are 2-3 overall and 2-1 in the Mountain West Conference. The men are 1-2 overall and 0-2 MWC.
AIR FORCE HOLIDAY CLASSIC RECAP: Members of the University of Utah men's and women's swimming teams took a break from training at the U.S. Olympic Training Center to compete in the Air Force Holiday Classic on Dec. 19, 2001. The classic consisted of five events with individual scoring.
The top finishers for the men were Daniel Godfrey and Cody Rempfer, finishing with 11 points each. Rempfer finished first in the 100-yard fly with a time of 54.56 and second in the 100 IM (57.98). Godfrey finished first in the 100 breast (1:02.84) and fourth in the 100 IM (58.33).
For the women, Courtney McKinney finished with 13 points. McKinney took top honors in the 100 IM (1:03.16) and second in the 100 breast with a time of 1:10.89. Sara Afong and Neringa Statkeviciute finished tied for second with 11 points each. Afong finished first in the 100 fly (1:01.47) and second in the 100 free (55.65). Statkeviciute finished first in the 100 free (52.56) and second in the 100 IM (1:04.58).
QUOTING COACH MIKE LITZINGER: "Washington will be a great challenge for us. They are in a similar position of rebuilding a program. Facing a team from the PAC-10 is exactly the type of competition we need heading into the conference part of our schedule."
UTE NOTES: Cody Rempfer was named MWC Men's Swimmer of the Week on Oct. 24. Rempfer set a Colorado State Early Bird Invitational record in the 200 fly (1:52.87). He has won the 200 fly in both of the meets he has competed. ... Loren Sweny set a Utah school record in the 200 back (2:05.27) against Oregon State. ... Neringa Statkeviciute is second on the Utah top performances list in the 100 free, posting a time of 51.26 against BYU. Statkeviciute has finished first in the 100 free in all five meets she has competed in. She also ranks fourth on the Ute top performances list in 50 free (23.85), winning the event three out of the last four meets.
