Salt Lake City - Kim Turner, co-captain of the University of Utah women's volleyball team, has been named to the Verizon Academic All-District VIII Women's Volleyball Team. Turner, a middle blocker, garnered All-District VIII honors with a 3. 536 GPA as an elementary education major.
The 18-member squad is selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). CoSIDA District VIII is comprised of the states of Alaska, California, Idaho, Hawaii, Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Washington, as well as the Canadian province of British Columbia.
Turner currently leads the conference in blocks per game (1.55) and is tied for second in kills per game (3.89). A three-time Mountain West Conference Player of the Week this season, Turner was named MVP of Utah Classic and was named to the Stanford and Boise State all-tournament teams.
Last season, as a sophomore, Turner was a Volleyball Magazine honorable mention All-American and an American Volleyball Coaches Association first-team all-region honoree. She is a two-time all-MWC selection and was the 2001 MWC Tournament MVP. She is also a two-time academic all-MWC honoree, was the 2000 MWC Freshman of the Year and was named to the MWC all-tournament team as a freshman.
In order to be eligible for the team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average, must be a starter or important reserve and must be in at least their second season of competition at their current school.
