FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The co-captains of the No. 24 University of Utah women's volleyball team were both honored tonight at the Mountain West Conference Tournament volleyball banquet. Junior middle blocker Kim Turner was named MWC co-Player of the Year, while senior Sylva Strzinkova was also named to the all-conference team.
A three-time MWC Player of the Week this season, Turner leads the conference in blocks with 1.61 per game and ranks in the league's top ten in hitting percentage (.286), kills (3.84 per game) and aces (0.35). She set the junior season record for blocks with 67 and ranks third on the MWC career blocks list with 466.
Turner was named MVP of the 2002 Utah Classic for the second year in a row and was named to both the Stanford and Boise State all-tournament teams.
Turner was previously named all-MWC in 2000 and 2001 and was the 2001 MWC Tournament MVP. She was also the 2000 MWC Freshman of the Year and was named to the MWC all-tournament team as a freshman.
As a sophomore, Turner was a Volleyball Magazine honorable mention All-American and an American Volleyball Coaches Association first-team all-region honoree.
Strzinkov? finished conference play ranked third in kills per game (3.88), tied for ninth in service aces (0.31) and 10th in digs per game (2.54). She has 13 double-doubles this season and is the MWC career leader in the category with 29 in just two seasons.
Strzinkov? was named to the all-tournament teams at the Utah Classic, the Boise State Invitational and the Stanford Invitational.
Last season, Strzinkov? was named to the all-conference team and to the MWC all-tournament team. She was also an academic all-MWC honoree.
The Utes face Wyoming in the first round of the MWC Tournament at 11:00 a.m. tomorrow, Thursday, Nov. 21, at Colorado State.
