SALT LAKE CITY - Junior Kim Turner, co-captain of the University of Utah women's volleyball team, has been named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-West Region team. In addition, senior co-captain Sylva Strzinkova was named an honorable mention selection. Turner now advances to the national ballot for All-America consideration, which will be announced on Wednesday, Dec. 18.
Turner was the Co-Mountain West Conference Player of the Year and was named MVP of the MWC Tournament for the second year in a row. Additionally, she was the MVP of the Utah Classic and was named to the all-tournament teams at the Stanford and Boise State Invitationals.
A four-time MWC Player of the Week this season alone, Turner recorded one triple-double and nine double-doubles during the season. She finished the season as the conference leader in blocks per game (1.64), and ranked second in kills per game (3.87), tied for seventh in service aces (0.32) and ranked ninth in hitting percentage (.294).
Turner broke the school record for total blocks in a match with 13 against San Jose State on Sept. 7. Her 2002 season statistics placed her in the top 10 in several single-season statistical categories. She was second in block assists (169), third in total blocks (195), sixth in kills (461) and 10th in hitting percentage (.294).
On her career, she ranks first all-time in the Utah record books with 500 total blocks. She also ranks second all-time in block assists with 445 (just five away from first place), fifth in kills with 1,130 and seventh in block solos with 55 (just one away from sixth place).
Strzinkov? was named all-MWC for the second year in a row. She was also named to her second consecutive MWC Tournament all-tournament team and to the all-tournament teams at the Utah Classic, Stanford and Boise State Invitationals.
An all-around player, Strzinkov? finished the season ranked fourth in the conference in kills per game (3.78), tied for 10th in service aces (0.30), 11th in digs per game (2.52) and 18th in hitting percentage (.242).
