SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah's women's tennis team triumphed over Rice University, 4-3. This was an excellent win for the Utes knowing Rice has been in contention for a national ranking all year. The (7-10) Owls have competed against many top-ranked opponents. Their recorded victories includes a win over No. 75 ranked Missouri, 4-3.
In singles action, sophomore Sheri Esrock stole the show by defeating a very competitive Jeri Gonzales from Rice. Esrock withstood a late comeback by Gonzales to win the match, 7-5, 3-6, 7-6. "We played tough," says Esrock. "It's great to finally pull out a tough match and win one for the team." In other singles competition, Linn Ronnberg etched Natalie Briaud in impressive fashion, 6-1, 6-3. Utah's Ellen Svensson notched Annie Goodrich, 6-3, 6-3 and Cassie Kasteler defeated Yasmin Fisher, 6-4, 6-1.
In doubles action, the Utes were overwhelmed by the Owls, but pulled out one quality win. Kotoglou and Svensson ousted Gonzales and Fisher, 8-3. Ronnberg and Esrock were defeated by Goodrich and Judith Hagedorn, 8-4 and Kasteler and freshman Allison Hansen were notched by Briaud and Karen Chao, 8-2.
Coming up, the Utes will take on top-seeded TCU. TCU is ranked No. 31 in the polls and have acquired a 9-3 overall record. This match will be played Sunday, Mar. 17 at 11:00 a.m. and it will be held at the Eccles Tennis Center.
