LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The University of Utah's women's tennis team was defeated by the No. 39 ranked Aztecs of San Diego State, 7-0. The Aztecs have successfully defeated numerous top-ranked opponents including an upset over No. 18 Notre Dame. This defeat puts the Utes at 1-1 in the Mountain West Conference.
In singles action, senior Linn Ronnberg was notched by Silvia Tornier, 6-3, 6-2. Tornier was MWC Player of the Week last week. Sheri Esrock was defeated by Lindsey Hedberg, 7-5, 6-4. Senior Irini Kotoglou was etched out by Katja Karrento, 7-5, 6-0. Captain Cassie Kasteler was edged by Katalina Romero, 6-3, 6-0. Freshman Allison Hansen was notched out by Julie Chidley, 6-1, 6-2.
In doubles action, Kotoglou and Svensson were defeated by Tornier and Hedberg, 8-0. Hansen and Kasteler were ousted by Karrento and Romero, 8-2. Ronnberg and Esrock were etched out by Chidley and Becker, 8-6.
Next up, the women netters will continue play in Las Vegas, Nev. Their next match is against No.17 ranked UNLV. This match begins Sat., Mar. 23 at 10:00 a.m.
