SALT LAKE CITY- The University of Utah swimming and diving teams finished the conference season on Saturday, Mar. 2, after the women finished fourth in the Mountain West Conference Championships and the men finished fifth.
Head Coach Mike Litzinger also garnered MWC Women's Coach of the Year honors in his second season as the head coach of the Utes. This marks the fifth time Litzinger has received such an honor. He received the coach of the year honors in the Eastern Intercollegiate Conference in 1992 and `94 and also in the Atlantic-10 in 1996 and `97. Already during Litzinger's two year tenure 13 out of 19 swimming records have been broken.
The women broke six school records, all of which were set at the MWC Championships. Freshman Tessa Greegor set a school record in the 100 breast (1:02.98) and sophomore Neringa Statkeviciute set the school record in the 200 free (1:46.69). Greegor and Stakeviciute are both NCAA provisional qualifiers in the events. Sweny also set the record in the 200 back (2:03.31).
In the 200 IM, Courtney McKinney set a school record of 2:05.94. Sara Afong now holds the school record in the 200 fly (2:07.69). The women's 800 free relay team of Statkeviciute, Sweny, McKinney and Kristen Kaiser set a school record at the MWC Championships of 7:26.56.
For the men, Cody Rempfer and Evan Castro qualified for the U.S. National Championships in Minneapolis, Minn. Rempfer qualified in the 200 fly and Castro will compete in the 100 breast.
