SALT LAKE CITY - The rivalry lives on as No. 41 ranked BYU defeats the University of Utah's women's tennis team, 5-2. "Losing our early leads was the reason for the lose," says John Tsumas. Losing the leads seems to be the reoccurring problem for the Utes this season. The women netters had many opportunities to put the Cougars away, but just couldn't overcome them in the end. This lose puts Utah at 8-12 on the season and 2-5 in the Mountain West Conference.
In singles action, freshman Ellen Svensson topped Rebecca Pike at the two spot, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2. Captain Irini Kotoglou knocked off Lindsay Ferrell, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3. Sheri Esrock was defeated in a tight match against Lu Oswald, 7-6, 6-4 and senior Linn Ronnberg was etched out by Dominique Reynolds, 6-4, 6-2.
In doubles action, Utah was unable to hold on to their leads once again as the Cougars took the doubles point. The Ronnberg and Esrock tandem edged out Pike and Khovdoiarova, 8-6. Kotoglou and Hansen were up 4-0 before being defeated by Reynolds and Oswald, 8-4 and Cassie Kasteler and Svensson were notched by Ferrell and Schneider in another tight match, 9-7.
Next up, Utah will be up against another instate team Southern Utah. The match will be held at the Eccles Tennis Center, Sat., Apr. 13, at 2:00 p.m.
