PROVO, Utah - The University of Utah's women's tennis team was unable to get the win to secure the 5th place seeding in the Mountain West Conference Tournament as Air Force defeats the Utes, 4-3. This match went all the way down to the wire, but it was the Utes poor doubles play that allowed the Falcons to come away with the win.
In the singles competition, it was the Utes seniors that kept them in the match. Linn Ronnberg was able to beat out Laura Nigro, 7-6, 6-1. Irini Kotoglou knocked off Gina Black, 6-3, 6-2 and junior Cassie Kasteler overwhelmed Kelli O'Bryant, 6-1, 6-1.
Sheri Esrock and Ellen Svennson both had leads going into their second set but were unable to finish down the stretch. Esrock fell at the No. 1 spot to Brooke Parsons, 5-7, 6-1, 10-6 and Svennson was etched out by Heather Shelby, 4-6, 6-1, 10-6.
In doubles action, the women netters couldn't get anything going for them as they lost the doubles point, which seemed to be the deciding factor in the match. The Kotoglou and Allison Hansen duo were overpowered by Parsons and Nigro, 8-1 and Ronnberg and Esrock were topped by Ashley Gee and Bryant, 8-2.
Utah finished the 2001-2002 season with a 10-15 overall record and went 2-5 in the MWC. The Utes are unfortunately losing two of there star players in senior Ronnberg and senior Kotoglou. Ronnberg predominately played this season at the No. 1 position. She obtained a 9-16 duel record while Kotoglou finished 9-13 on the year.
