SALT LAKE CITY - The collegiate swimming season may have officially ended in March, but Utes Loren Sweny and Ariane Kich have continued training and competing during the summer season.
Sweny (Manotick, Canada), who will be a sophomore in the fall, and Kich (Guelph, Ontario), an incoming freshman, both competed in the Domino's Swim Classic last weekend in Ann Arbor, Mich. The Domino's Classic is the first of five stops this summer on the USA Swimming Grand Prix Circuit leading up to major International competition.
Sweny, a Mountain West Conference first team selection and the Utah record holder in the 200 back and 800 free relay, continued her first-year success at the Grand Prix. Competing for the Eastern Ontario All-Stars, Sweny lead her team to victories in the 400 freestyle relay and 800 freestyle relay. Individually, she placed 12th in the 200-meter back in a time of 2:26.90.
"Loren put in an extraordinary spring in developing her strength and technique," said Ute head coach Michael Litzinger. "She has her eyes set on some great performances at the Canadian Nationals later this summer."
Kich, who will be among 13 women joining the Utes this fall, also made her presence know in Ann Arbor. Kich recorded lifetime best unshaved performances in the 100-meter breast (1:15.52) and the 200-meter event (2:45.10). Both swims were good enough for placings of ninth and 15th, respectively.
"Ariane is a very special and dedicated athlete, who will bring a great amount of energy to our team next year," states Litzinger. "She also is pointing to Nationals as her peak meet of the summer."
The 2002 Canadian National Championships will be held Aug. 6-10 in Victoria, British Columbia.
