SALT LAKE CITY - Several members of the University of Utah swimming team engaged in summer competition this past weekend with excellent results.
At the Mission Viejo Meet of Champions, Evan Castro placed second in the 100-meter breast, clocking a 1:05.64. Castro placed 10th in the same event last spring at the U.S. National Championships and was runner-up at the 2002 Mountain West Conference Championships. "Evan's performance at the Meet of Champions is very exciting. It certainly is one of the fastest times in the U.S. at this point and has set him up for an excellent summer," states Utah head coach Michael Litzinger. Castro was named Utah's Most Valuable Swimmer last season, and is currently competing for his home club, the Redlands Swim Team.
Closer to home, several Utes competed in the 27th Annual Cottonwood Heights Invitational. Leading the way for Utah was Kristen Kaiser, who won the 200- and 400-meter individual medleys with times of 2:29.33 and 5:10.01, respectively. Kaiser was also second in the 100-meter backstroke, 200 and 400 freestyle.
Neringa Statkeviciute continued her dominance in the freestyle events winning the 50-meter free (27.19), 100 free (59.16), 200 free (2:09.09) and 400 free (4:35.84). She returns home to Lithuania later this month to compete in its national championships.
Sophomore Bryn Evans was second in the 100 breast at 1:19.16. Sara Afong clocked a 2:12.11 to finish third in the 200-meter free.
The Utah men were lead at Cottonwood by David Fleisch, Dave Johnson and Trent Shino. Fleisch clocked a 2:19.83 in the 200 individual medley and a 25.26 in the 50-meter free, both of which were good enough for third place. Trent Shino?s time of 1:09.05 in the 100 breast earned him second place. Dave Johnson took second with a time of 2:19.56 in the 200-meter backstroke.
Afong, Evans, Fleisch, Johnson, Kaiser and Shino will represent the Cottonwood Heights Aquatic Team in the upcoming 2002 Speedo Champions Series, July 18-21 in Austin, Texas.
