THIS WEEK:
The Ute women will face two Mountain West Conference opponents on the road when they travel to Colorado State on Thurs. Jan. 16th at 5:00 p.m. Following the meet with the Rams Utah will head to New Mexico for a meet on Sat. Jan. 18th at 1:00 p.m.
UTE NOTES:
The Utah women are 7-6 (2-1 in conference). This week's meets will be the first conference action for the Utes since Dec. 7th. Utah is currently ranked third in the MWC. Marta Stepanczuk a transfer from Poland who joined the Utes in December, posted a time in the 1000 free against Oregon State that moved her into 4th all-time at Utah. Stepanczuk's 500 free time at the Florida Atlantic Invitational places her sixth all time. The men will resume their season on Jan. 24th when Wyoming visits. Jonathan Larsen has not lost in the 50 free this year.
SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION:
Colorado State is in second place in the MWC standings with an in-conference record of 3-1. The Rams beat Utah last year by one point in the final race. New Mexico is in fourth in the conference with a mark of 3-2. The Lobos lost to the Utes in Salt Lake last year but won two years ago in Albuquerque.
REVIEWING LAST WEEK:
Utah's men and women each lost on Saturday against a nationally-ranked Washington team. The men lost 120-101 while the women fell 125-90. On Friday the women lost to Oregon State 148-134 in a meet that went down to the final race to determine the winner. Jonathan Larsen won two events against Washington, while on the women's side Neringa Statkeviciute won three events and Loren Sweny won two events against Oregon State.
QUOTING HEAD COACH MICHAEL LITZINGER: "This week will be big. We start again with the conference schedule and from now until the conference championship we will only swim Mountain West Conference teams. The remainder of the schedule will show us where we stand compared to the conference."
