The Utah men's and women's swimming and diving team fell to Brigham Young on Friday night at the Ute Natatorium. On a night where Ute seniors John Carlile and David Fleisch were honored, the men fell 129-69. The women who beat BYU earlier in the season could not pull off the victory as they fell 139-102. With the conclusion of the regular season Utah will now turn its attention to the Mountain West Conference Championships coming up Feb. 19-22.
The men were led by Evan Castro who was the only winner against the Cougars. Castro won the 100 breast with a time of 56.54. Utah's final record is 5-8 (1-4 in conference) and will leave them in fourth for the MWC Championships.
Utah's women won 5 of 13 events. Meghan Demchuk won the 100 fly (58.92) and was on the winning 200 medley relay (1:48.20). Kristen Kaiser was a winner in the 400 IM (4:28.60) and the 500 free (5:09.00). The Utes finish with a record of 10-8 (5-3 in conference), which is their first winning season since 1988.
"The men swam other events that their usual ones in preparation for the Mountain West Conference Championships and the score was indicitive of that," comments Head Coach Michael Litzinger. "The women swam well and are focusing on the conference championships."
