More than 40 years ago, Utah swim coach Don Reddish established an event called the "Beehive Relays." These relays were an exciting way to kick off the collegiate swimming season and became a Utah tradition.
The University of Utah will honor the longtime swimming coach as they open the season with the Utah/BYU Relays. Reddish, who coached Utah from 1949-1990, will be honored by having the annual meet named after him. The Don Reddish Relays will be held on Oct. 24, beginning at 6:00 p.m.
In 42 years, Don Reddish led the Utah swimming and diving teams to 19 conference championships, and coached more than 100 individual conference champions. Reddish had 28 All-Americans in 34 different events. Under Reddish's guidance, the Ute men finished with a combined record of 267-84-6. During his time in the Western Athletic Conference his Utah teams won 17 of 27 team titles. His swimmers and divers also won more than half of the individual conference titles from 1963-1990. In 1975, Jeff Rolan became the Utes first and only NCAA Champion in the 100 butterfly.
Reddish was inducted into the Crimson Club Hall of Fame on May 13, 1996, in recognition for his outstanding contributions to University of Utah athletics. Looking at his record, it's easy to understand why he's one of the most successful coaches in collegiate swimming history. Besides working on the deck with Ute swimmers, Reddish twice served as chairman of the NCAA Rules Committee and was a member of the Olympic Swimming Committee.
The University of Utah also established the Don Reddish Award to honor the coach of a sport other than football, men's and women's basketball and gymnastics, who is deemed to have had the most successful season the previous year.
