This Week: SALT LAKE CITY, Utah -- Led by the strong play of the Svensson sisters, the University of Utah women's tennis team shook off a four match losing streak today with a win over a tough Idaho State team. The win puts the Utes at 3-4 on the season, and they are now 2-1 at the Eccles Tennis Center in Salt Lake City.
Freshman Maria Svensson teamed up with Allison Hansen to defeat Melanie Kranz and Kristina Arutjunova 9-7 in the number two doubles. Along with Hilary Doyle and Rachel Alder's performance in the no. 3 doubles, an 8-2 win over Armine Sarkavagyan and Carol Tolsma, the Utes were able to capture the doubles point for the first time in four matches. The doubles point turned out to be the difference, as the singles play went an even 3-3.
Maria Svensson had another win, this time in the number five singles position, 6-2, 6-2, over Sarkavagyan. Her sophomore sister, Ellen, wsa able to control Melanie Kranz, winning 6-1, 6-0. The other Ute singles point came with Allison Hansen's 6-3, 6-1 victory over Arutjunova.
The three Idaho State point came off close Ute contests. Cassie Kasteler was narrowly edged out in a third-set, 10-point tie-break, 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (7-3). Hilary Doyle and Carol Tolsma, knotted at a set a piece, played a tie-breaker for the third set as Utah had already bagged the victory on the day. Rachel Alder went up a set on Hayli Scott, but went down 6-3, 2-6, 3-6.
