OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla.- The University of Utah swimming and diving team is back in contention as the second day of the Mountain West Conference Championships concluded. Utah's women jumped two spots and are now in fourth place, while the men have closed the gap and are in fifth.
Kristen Kaiser finished second in the 500 free with a time of 4:54.47, which broke a Utah school record. Finishing third in the 500 free was teammate Loren Sweny, who also was under the record time with a time of 4:55.01. Neringa Statkeviciute finished fourth in the 50 free, her time of 23.41 is an NCAA provisional qualifier.
On the men's side Jonathan Larsen finished third in the 50 free with a time of 20.13. Larsen's time is also a NCAA provisional qualifier. Corey Kilpatrick was second in the 500 free (4:28.07). The Utes are battling with Air Force and Wyoming for third place.
"It has been a great championship meet," comments Head Coach Michael Litzinger. "We are swimming very well and are back in contention."
Day three events begin at 10:00 a.m. CST, on Friday, Feb. 21.
