The University of Utah will send 11 swimmers to the 2003 ConocoPhillips Spring National Championships on April 1-5, in Indianapolis, Ind. This is the most swimmers Utah has ever qualified for nationals in one year. "Next to the NCAA's this is the most important meet for the team to go to," comments Head Coach Michael Litzinger. "This is a chance for swimmers to achieve Olympic trial qualifying times, and it prepares them for the national stage."
Ute swimmers that will be competing include; Neringa Statkeviciute (50, 100, 200 M freestyle), Loren Sweny (200, 400 freestyle), Kristen Kaiser (200 butterfly, 400 IM), Tessa Greegor (100 breast), Melissa Young (400, 800 free relay), and Amy Barefield (400, 800 free relay). For the men, Utah will send Jonathan Larsen (50, 100 freestyle), Evan Castro (100 breast, 50 freestyle), Cody Rempfer (200 IM, 200 breast, 100 and 200 butterfly), David Johnson (400 free relay, 400 medley relay) and David Fleisch (400 free relay, 400 medley relay).
The championships traditionally attract the best swimmers from around the world. This year will be no exception as the Australian national team along with assorted record holders from around the world will be competing. Last year Utah finished 25th as a team at the championships.
