Utah Swimming Adds Spring Recruits

The University of Utah Swimming and Diving team announced its spring signings on Tuesday. Utah has added four new recruits for the upcoming season. Alison McInturff, Matthew Baily, Wesley Johnson and Corey Costomiris will be new additons to the team.
Alison McInturff-From Century High School in Pocatello, Idaho, McInturff will swim the free, fly and IM for Utah. She is a four-time Idaho state champion, in 2001 and 2002 she won the 50 and 100 freestyle. Best times: 50 Free :24.20 ... 100 Free :52.57 ... 100 Fly :57.25
"Alison is an athlete that will make an immediate impact on our program. She brings an extra element to our sprint group, and also has the versatility to add to our butterfly and IM," comments Head Coach Michael Litzinger.
McInturff joins Fall Signees, Rachel Curci, Erin O'Connor, Marissa Martin, and University of Maryland transfer Jamie Trapp.
Matthew Bailey- From Draper, Utah, attended Northridge High School, Bailey holds the Northridge school record in the 100, 200 and 500 freestyles and will swim the sprint free for Utah. Best times: 50 Free :21.79 ... 100 Free :48.79
"Matt is a return missionary who grew 5 inches while he was away. His maturity and power will translate well into our sprint group," states Litzinger.
Wesley Johnson- Hails from Springville, Utah and attended Springville High School, Johnson was the Utah high school state runner-up in the 500 free and holds Springville HS records in 100 back, 200 free and 200 medley relay. He will swim the free and back for the Utes. Best times: 200 Free 1:48.79 ... 100 Free 4:49.49
"Wes has a lot of raw talent, and we began to see some of that this High School season. He will develop into a great contributor in our distance group, and add to our depth in the 200 Back," comments Litzinger.
Corey Costomiris- Attended Tooele High School and is from Stansbury Park, Utah, Costomiris will swim the sprint free for Utah. He is the Utah 3A High School Champion in the 50 free and 200 free relay. Best Times: 50 Free :21.97 ... 100 Free :48.64
"Corey has made some tremendous improvements under former Ute Mel Roberts coaching this year. He is the kind of athlete who has their best swimming ahead of them. Needless to say I am excited at the opportunity to work with Corey," says Litzinger.
These student athletes join David Maasberg, Andrew Cole, Sebastien Bedaw, Nick Galen, and Damian Brown who signed with Utah this fall.
Utah fall signings:
Andrew Cole is a 6-3 180-pound swimmer from Newport Harbor High School in Newport Beach, Calif. "Andrew is the top backstroke and freestyle sprint swimmers in Southern California," says Litzinger. Cole had times of 20.86 in the 50 free, 51.02 in the 100 back and 150.26 in the 200 back. Cole is the top incoming recruit for the men.
Damien Brown is a diver from New Zealand; he is a national champion and is one of the top divers in New Zealand. He will graduate in November, but will not compete for Utah until next season.
Nick Galen comes from Lake Highlands High School in Dallas, Texas. He will swim the breaststroke and IM for Utah. "Nick will continue a great Utah tradition in the breast and IM," states Litzinger. He was a first team all-state swimmer in 2002 and on the second team all-state in 2001. Galen has not competed in any meets as a High School senior yet.
Sebastien Bedaw hails from Dallas, Texas, and swims at The Woodlands High School. "Sebastien will shore up the butterfly for Utah, which has been a weakness," comments Litzinger. Bedaw will swim the butterfly and IM for the Utes. He was a second-team all-state swimmer last year.
David Maasberg is from Skyline High School in Salt Lake City. He was the 5A state champion in the 100 breast and 200 IM, he was also on the state record holding 400 free relay team. "David is a very physical swimmer," says Litzinger. "He has great potential to be awesome."
Marta Stepanczuk hails from Poland. She earned the silver medal in national competition in the 400 and 800 Free. "Marta is an Olympic hopeful from Poland and will join the team in January," comments Litzinger. "We are excited to have her." Stepanczuk will start swimming in competition for the Utes against Florida Atlantic. She is a transfer student with three years of eligibility left, and is the top women's prospect coming in for the team.
Rachel Curci is from Dakota High School in Clinton Twp, Mich. She is the top distance swimmer in Michigan. "Rachel should continue the great distance freestyle tradition at Utah over the next four years," states Litzinger. Curci was an all-state selection in the 500 free in 2001.
Marissa Martin hails from Ronald Regan High School in San Antonio, Texas. "Marissa is an exceptional backstroke swimmer," states Litzinger. "She will help the team in the sprints and backstroke, an area Utah has been lacking in." Both of Martin's parents are graduates of the University of Utah.
Erin O'Connor, a Salt Lake City native, swims for Brighton High School. She is the state champion in the 100 back. "Erin is a talented backstroke and freestyle swimmer," comments Litzinger. "She has her best swimming ahead of her."
