LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The Utah baseball team scored seven runs in the eighth inning to secure an 18-8 victory over No. 15 UNLV this afternoon in Las Vegas, Nev. With the win, the Utes improve to 23-30 overall and 10-20 in Mountain West Conference play.
Freshman Jason Price (4-1) earned the win on the mound. He pitched 5 2/3 innings, giving up seven runs on 12 hits, while striking out three.
The Utes scored in the first on a two-run double by sophomore Matt Ciaramella. They made it 3-0 on an RBI-single by junior Eric Chevalier.
Utah added another run in the top of the second when senior Wick Udy hit a tripled to center field and was brought home on a base hit by senior Mike Basham.
UNLV got on the board in the bottom of the second on a solo homer. They added another run on a balk in the third, making it 4-2 in favor of the Utes.
In the top of the fourth, Udy led off with a solo long ball. Basham then scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman Ryan Khoury later that inning.
Senior Jake Jordison hit a solo homer to center field in the fifth, but the Rebels answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning to make it 7-3.
Junior Cort Wilson knocked a two-run single to left field in the top of the sixth to give Utah a 9-3 lead.
The Rebels cut the Ute lead to two in the bottom of the sixth on a three-run homer and an RBI-single, bringing the score to 9-7.
The Utes scored one run in the top of the seventh to make it 10-7.
Then, in the eighth, Utah broke out with seven runs. It started when junior Mike Westfall hit an RBI-double. After a UNLV pitching change, Chevalier doubled, driving in two runs. Later in the inning, with two men on, junior Jared Pena homered, making it 16-7.
The Utes added another run in the top of the ninth on a Chevalier sacrifice fly.
The Rebels managed one more run in the bottom of the ninth, but it wasn't enough.
Seven Utes finished with multiple-hit games, led by Basham, who was a perfect 5-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBI. Ciaramella was 2-for 3 with four runs and two driven in, while Pena and Udy each went 2-for-4. Chevalier was 3-for-6 on the game, while Wilson and Khoury were both 2-for-5.
