SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic - Kim Smith scored 10 points as the Canadian National Team fell to Brazil 57-46 to place fourth at the Pan American Games on Saturday.
The defeat was Team Canada's second to Brazil in the tournament as they dropped a 62-53 decision to the Brazilians in the preliminary round.
Trailing 24-18 at the half, Canada cut the lead to 39-36 after three quarters of play before Brazil pulled away late in the fourth with some timely three-pointers. Final rebounding totals favored Brazil 34-23.
With the loss, the Canadian Senior Women remain with a total of four medals at the Pan American Games. Canada previously finished third at the 1967, 1979 and 1987 Games, before winning silver in 1999.
The national team will now focus its attention on securing a spot in the 2004 Summer Olympics when the Women's COPABA Qualification Tournament gets underway in Mexico City, Mexico, at the end of September.
