The Utah women's swimming and diving team knocked off New Mexico 146-90 on Friday night. Utah dominated the Lobos winning 11 of 13 events on their way to the victory. Leading the way for Utah was Amy Barefield and Marta Stepanczuk, each winning three events. Barefield was a winner in the 400 medley relay (3:57.77), 50 free (24.63) and 100 free (53.21). Stepanczuk added victories in the 1000 free (10:23.32), 500 free (5:04.87) and the 400 free relay (3:41.68).
The Utes saw several different swimmers win events against the Lobos. Rachel Curci won the 200 free, Ariane Kich added a win in the 200 breast, Jamie Trapp won the 200 breast and Kristen Kaiser finished on top in the 200 IM. "We did what we had to do tonight. In the end we were just too much for New Mexico," comments Head Coach Michael Litzinger. "We had to focus on winning tonight to set up for Colorado State. This meet shows how deep we really are, we had several swimmers step up and perform well."
Utah will battle Colorado State on Saturday, Jan. 17, at 4:00 p.m. The meet will be held at the Ute Natatorium and matches two of the top contenders in the Mountain West Conference.
