THIS WEEK:
Both the Utah men's and women's swimming and diving teams will travel to Provo, Utah, for a meet against BYU on Friday, Jan. 30, at 6:00 p.m. The Ute women have already clinched a share of the Mountain West Conference championship and with a win can secure the title outright. The men's meet will determine the conference championship as both teams head into the meet undefeated in conference meets.
UTE NOTES:
The Utah women are 9-1 overall and 6-0 in MWC competition. The men are 7-0 overall and 3-0 in MWC meets.
By clinching a share of the regular season MWC title, the Ute women have won the first championship of any kind in the history of the program. Over the weekend, Marissa Martin set a pool record in the 200 back at Wyoming and also won the 200 back against Air Force.
The Ute men saw Cody Rempfer, Evan Castro and Jonathan Larsen win four events each against Air Force. Diver Sterling Richards won all four boards over the weekend. Because Utah and BYU each have identical conference records, the meet this weekend will determine the outright conference champion. Utah last won the conference title in 1995.
SCOUTING BRIGHAM YOUNG:
On the men's side, BYU is ranked 20th in the nation. The Cougars come into the meet 3-0 in the MWC and beat Utah twice last season. In the first meet BYU won 161.5-81.5. The Cougars won the second meet with a score of 129-69.
For the women, BYU is 4-2 in the conference. The teams split the season series last year. Utah won the first meet 135-112 in Provo, but lost 139-102 in Salt Lake.
LOOKING BACK AT WYOMING AND AIR FORCE:
Utah beat Wyoming 135-102 in the women's competition and the Ute men won 150-93. The 400 medley relay team of Andrew Cole, Evan Castro, Cody Rempfer and Jonathan Larsen set a Wyoming pool record with a time of 3:23.19. Meghan Demchuk led the women, winning three events. Demchuk won the 200 IM, 200 fly and was on the winning 400 medley relay team, which also set a Wyoming pool record.
On Saturday, the Ute women's swimming and diving team clinched a share of the Mountain West Conference championship. Utah earned a 163-117 victory against Air Force. The Utah men's team also knocked off the Falcons, winning by a score of 162-132.
QUOTING HEAD COACH Michael Litzinger:
"I'm incredibly pleased with the progress of both teams. BYU is the defending conference champions and it should be a great meet. The men will face a big test, BYU is ranked 20th in the nation. The women have gone back and forth with the Cougars over the last couple of years. We expect them to be ready for us."
