THIS WEEK:
The University of Utah swimming and diving teams head to California to compete against UC Irvine and UC San Diego. On Jan. 9, the Utes will battle UC Irvine at 12:00 p.m. (PT), and on Jan. 10, Utah will meet UC San Diego at 11:00 a.m. (PT).
UTE NOTES:
The Utes remain unbeaten in both men's and women's competition. The men are 3-0 (1-0 MWC) while the women are 4-0 (2-0 MWC). Tessa Greegor holds the MWC top time in the 100 breast with a time of 1:03.42. Meghan Demchuk holds the MWC top time in the 100 butterfly with her time of 57.56.
With the closure of the first semester of school, the Utah swimming team placed 24 athletes on the academic honor roll. Amy Barefield, Meghan Demchuk, Laura Jones, Kristen Kaiser, Marissa Martin, Alison McInturff, Erin O'Connor, Loren Sweny and Jorge Amorim were all placed on the Dean's List. "We are both proud and impressed with our student-athletes for their academic accomplishments. Doing well in academics is always a team goal and it is great to continue to be one of the strongest academic leaders in the conference," states Head Coach Michael Litzinger.
SCOUTING UC IRVINE AND UC SAN DIEGO:
UC Irvine heads into the meet with Utah looking for revenge as last season the Utes beat UCI by a score of 168-130 for the men and 165.5-132.5 for the women. "Irvine is a much improved team from last year and we expect a very competitive meet from them. The meet will be the start of the second semester of competition and will help us to be ready for the conference meets," says Litzinger.
UC San Diego was the Division II runner-up at the national championships. San Diego is coached by Scott McGihon a former Utah assistant coach. "San Diego has some great athletes and it will be a lot of fun to compete with a high quality team like they are."
LOOKING BACK AT FLORIDA ATLANTIC:
Both the men's and women's swimming and diving teams beat Florida Atlantic on Dec. 20. The men won big with a 165-67 score, while the women scored a 111.5-92.5 victory.
Leading the way for the Utah men was Cody Rempfer who won two individual events, the 200 IM (1:52.56) along with the 200 butterfly (1:48.79). For the women, Amy Barefield won the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.68. Meghan Demchuk won the 200 butterfly, finishing with a 2:07.00 time. Marissa Martin added a victory in the 200 backstroke as she finished with a time of 2:07.29.
The Utes were in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., over the holiday's for their annual holiday training from Dec. 12-23. "We had a great training session and our athletes returned to campus on Jan. 2 to continue what we started in Florida. The team is now in great shape. We have built a base and will now continue to develop our speed with the coming weeks of competition. The training will help us on our way to preparing for the MWC Championships," comments Litzinger.
