FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The University of Utah cross country teams finished competition for the Mountain Region Cross Country Championships on Saturday, Nov. 14. Hosted by Colorado State at Collindale Golf Course, the meet featured all Mountain Region Cross Country Squads. Utah's women's team earned a 9th place finish, improving upon their preseason 10th-place ranking. The men had a solid meet, finishing 10th in the region.
The Colorado Buffalos captured the men and women's team titles. The fourth ranked Buffalo men's team finished with 101 points, while the No. 3 Colorado women's squad finished with 32 points.
New Mexico senior Matt Gonzales paced the field with a time of 29:45.10 to claim the men's individual title. Colorado's Renee Metivier finished first for the women with a time of 20:05.4.
The Ute women participated in the 6,000-meter race and scored 247 points. Junior Elise Greenwood-Bahr led the team with an impressive ninth-place finish (21:05.2), and earned an individual trip to the NCAA Championship race. Senior Nellie Hammons finished 36th, followed by senior Charity Vernon at 62nd and sophomore Jennie Haertel at 72nd.
The men's team competed in the 10,000-meter race and scored 254 points. Senior Delfino Arevalo led the way with 30th place finish (30:54.3), and earned MWC All-Conference second team honors. Freshman Vance Twitchell finished 42nd, followed by senior Colby Frazier at 52nd and junior Kurt Michels at 69th.
"It was a good effort from both teams," states Head Coach Brian Appell. "The men had their best race of the year as far a team. We were very impressed with Elise whose performance push us ahead of previously ranked teams."
