The Runnin' Utes open a five-game homestand against Weber State on Tuesday, Dec. 28 at 7:00 p.m. in the Jon M. Huntsman Center. Utah then hosts Colorado on Thursday, Dec. 30, at 8:00 p.m.
Quickly On Utah
Utah (7-3) plays its third game in six nights to close out its pre-holiday schedule against Cal Poly (2-4) on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. (PST) at Mott Gymnasium (3,032) in San Luis Obispo, Calif. The game will be broadcast on Hot Ticket 700 (KALL-AM) and the Utah Sports Network. The Utes are 2-3 away from home this season.
Utah won its second consecutive game with a 66-37 win over Coppin State on Monday night in Salt Lake City. The Utes defeated Northern Colorado 81-66 last Friday night at home.
Sophomore center/forward Andrew Bogut (7-0, 240) leads the Utes in scoring (18.6 ppg), rebounding (10.4 rpg), blocked shots (21) and field goal percentage (64.0). Bogut has seven double-doubles this season. Senior guard Marc Jackson (6-1, 175) is second in scoring (12.2 ppg), hitting a team-best 58.3 percent of his three-point attempts (21-of-36) and 89.2 percent of his free throws. Junior forward/guard Richard Chaney (6-4, 195) is third on the team in scoring (10.5 ppg). Sophomore forward Justin Hawkins (6-5, 220) is fourth in scoring productivity (9.2 ppg) and is second in rebounding (4.0 rpg). Junior guard Tim Drisdom (6-3, 210) leads the Utes in assists (3.8 apg) and has a 2.53 assists to turnover ratio.
Scouting The Mustangs
Cal Poly is 2-4 overall and 2-1 at home this season. After losing their first four games, the Mustangs have won their last two--both in Mott Gymnasium. Cal Poly defeated Santa Clara 98-89 on Dec. 12 and Dominican 86-63 on Dec. 18.
Freshman guard Dawin Whiten (6-3, 205) leads the Mustangs in scoring (10.3 ppg), shooting 50.0 percent (11-for-22) from three-point range and 84.6 percent from the free throw line. Senior forward Mike Titchenal (6-5, 200) is second in scoring (9.2 ppg), making all 10 free throw attempts, and second in rebounding (4.7 rpg). Senior forward Nick Enzweiler (6-6, 230) is third in scoring (8.0 ppg) and has a team-high 12 assists. Enzweiler is also shooting 57.7 percent from the field and 54.5 percent from three-point range (12-for-22), and has made all six free throws.
I'll Be Home For Christmas
Utah has four Californians on its roster who will play their last game before the team's Christmas break in their home state. The Utes who are Golden State natives: Richard Chaney (Los Angeles), Tim Drisdom (Artesia), Justin Hawkins (Anaheim), and Bryant Markson (Monrovia). The Utes will take off three days for Christmas before returning to practice on Dec. 26.
Head Coach Kevin Bromley
Kevin Bromley is in his fourth full season as head coach of the Mustangs with a 48-58 record. Bromley served six years as the associate head coach and half of the 2000-01 season as the interim head coach before taking over as the head coach of the Mustangs on a full-time basis for the 2001-02 season. Before going 11-16 in 2003-04, Bromley had posted the school's first back-to-back winning seasons at the Division I level. He guided Cal Poly to a 16-14 mark and a fourth-place finish (10-8) in the Big West in his second full season as head coach in 2002-03. Bromley also led the Mustangs to a Big West Conference Tournament Championship game in the school's seventh year in the conference falling short by three points of a NCAA Tournament appearance.
Utah vs. Cal Poly Series Notes
? Utah and Cal Poly meet for the first time on Wednesday night.
? Ray Giacoletti is 0-2 all-time against Cal Poly, including a 0-1 record in Mott Gymnasium. The last time Giacoletti faced Cal Poly, his Eastern Washington team fell 75-70 on Dec. 9, 2001 in Cheney, Wash.
? Utah has a 170-95 (.642) all-time record against the Big West Conference, including a 55-57 (.491) mark in road games.
Boasting Of Bogut
Sophomore forward Andrew Bogut (7-0, 240) has been named to the 2004 John R. Wooden Preseason All-America Team and is a preseason candidate for the Naismith Award. Last season, Bogut was honored as the Mountain West Conference Freshman of the Year, second team all-MWC, and second team All-District 13 by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC). He also made the CollegeInsider.com all-freshman team.
? Bogut leads the Utes in scoring (18.6 ppg), rebounds (10.4 rpg), blocked shots (21), steals (15) and field goal percentage (64.0). He is also second in assists (2.6 apg), and is shooting 74.5 percent from the free throw line. He has led the Utes in scoring six times and in rebounding nine times this season.
? Bogut has had double-doubles in seven of the 10 games this season to rank first in the nation in that category as of Dec. 21. He has 21 double-doubles in his career. Bogut scored in double figures all 10 games this season, bringing his consecutive double-figure scoring streak to 12 games.
? He has four 20-point games this season to bring his career total to seven.
? In the NCAA statistical rankings released on Dec. 14, Bogut was 30th in field goal percentage (61.9) and 19th in rebounds per game (9.9 rpg).
? Bogut had a career high in points for the second consecutive game on Monday night, getting 28 against Coppin State. He shot 12-for-19 from the field to set personal best marks in both categories and 4-for-7 at the free throw line in 30 minutes. He also had 14 rebounds to record his seventh double-double of the season and four steals.
Take Note Of These Utes
? Freshman Jermaine Calvin (5-9, 177) tied a season-high with five assists (just one turnover) in a season-best 26 minutes against Coppin State on Dec. 20. He had a season-best five assists (no turnovers) for the first time against Montana-Western on Dec. 8. Calvin had a season-high eight points against Northern Colorado on Dec. 17, making 6-of-8 free throws and 1-of-3 field goals in 21 minutes. The last four games, the Tempe, Ariz., native has 13 assists and four turnovers.
? Junior forward Bryant Markson had his fifth double-figure scoring game of the season with 10 points against Coppin State on Dec. 20, shooting 4-for-6 from the field, 1-for-2 from three-point range and 1-for-3 at the free throw line. He also had six rebounds in 25 minutes. Markson had a career-high 15 points against Montana-Western on Dec. 8. He made all six shots from the field and converted 3-of-4 free throws. Earlier this season on Nov. 27, Markson had a career-best eight rebounds against Furman.
Getting It Done At The Free Throw Line
The Utes have done an excellent job of getting to the free throw line and converting this season. Through nine games, Utah is shooting 74.8 percent from the charity stripe, leading the Mountain West Conference in that category. The U. ranked 21st in the NCAA in free throw percentage (76.2) as of Dec. 14.
? The Utes have made 157 free throws while their opponents have attempted just 137. Utah is 7-1 when it has more free throw attempts than its opponents this season.
? Five Utes are shooting over 70 percent from the line this season: Tim Drisdom (92.9), Marc Jackson (89.2), Richard Chaney (81.3), Andrew Bogut (74.5) and Justin Hawkins (71.0).
Getting Defensive
One of the trademarks of Utah basketball in recent years has been a stifling half-court defense. Since the 1989-90 season, Utah has finished in the top 30 in the nation 12 times in scoring defense, 10 times in rebound margin, eight times in field goal percentage defense and eight times in scoring margin.
? Utah has not allowed an opponent to score 80 points in 138 consecutive games that have ended in regulation. The last team to score 80 points on the Utes in a 40-minute game was Wyoming (88) on Feb. 28, 2000 in Laramie, Wyo.
? The Utes have outrebounded the opposition in seven of the 10 games this season, and had a push in one other game (vs. Stony Brook in the season opener), going 7-1 in those contests. The Utes have a +7.4 rebound margin per game this season. That continues a trend from last season when the Utes outrebounded 30 of 33 opponents.
? Utah has allowed just two opponents to shoot better than 50 percent from the field this season: Washington (53.4 percent in a loss) and Utah State (65.0 percent in a loss).
? In the final 2003-04 NCAA statistical rankings, Utah ranked fifth in scoring defense (57.4 ppg) and fifth in rebound margin (+7.4 rpg).
