The University of Utah women's tennis team was downed by No. 56 Denver 7-0 at home in the Eccles Tennis Center.
In doubles play, the Utes only managed to pick up one win. At the No.3 spot, senior Rachel Alder and freshman Jessica Watts downed Beth Messaros and Stephanie Ginsburg (8-4). Senior Sheri Esrock teamed up with freshman Cinthia Saucedo but fell to Yanick Dullens and Suzana Maksovic (8-4). Playing at the No. 2, freshman Whitney Eber and Jenessa Jackson were defeated by Jenny Trentin and Barbara Kourim (8-3).
In singles, the Pioneers swept the Utes. Esrock fell to Dullens (5-7, 6-2, 10-6) at the No. 1 spot. At the No. 2, Eber lost to Maksovic (6-3, 6-3) and Saucedo lost to Trettin (6-0, 6-1) at the No. 3. Watts fell to Kourim (6-3, 6-1) at the No. 4 and Alder was defeated by Rachel Sackmaster (6-2, 6-4) at the No. 5. At the No. 6, Jackson was downed by Messaros (6-2, 6-4).
Head Coach Megan Dorny comments on the match. "Well, we had a tough day today. I feel like we're just coming up a little bit short in the doubles. In the last couple of days we've won one but we've come up short on one of the other two.I think we've got a couple of pretty good combinations but we're looking to find a couple of spots where we can win consistentley."
"As far as singles goes we've got some pretty good teams. Acouple of the players from Denver are ranked about 60 or 80. As always we need to have a lot of strength lower in the lineup. We need to have a couple of wins down there in order to be competitive. The No. 1 and 2 spots are tough spots to play. Sheri did a great job up there at No. 1 again today. She had chances to win and maybe felt a little bit of a let down coming off of a big win yesterday. We put a lot of our inexperienced down low but those spots are the ones that we really need to step up and as young of a team as they are playing without a couple of our better players and they're doing a really good job."
