OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - The Utah swimming and diving teams finished day two at the 2004 Mountain West Conference Championships. The men remain in second with a score of 280, trailing Brigham Young by 25 points. The Ute women jumped from sixth to fourth and now have 180 points.
The Utah men remained in second after the second day of competition. Sterling Richards won the three-meter diving with a score of 534.55, 27 points ahead of second-place. In the 50 free, Jonathan Larsen finished in 20.34, finishing second. Corey Kilpatrick finished third in the 500 free with a time of 4:27.58. In the 200 IM, Cody Rempfer placed third finishing in 1:50.96. The 200 free relay team of Larsen, Rempfer, Evan Castro and Matan Ratz finished third with their time of 1:21.56. "Richards won the three-meter dive, and the guys swam well today. This was a great team effort," comments Head Coach Michael Litzinger.
The Utah women made up ground on day two to move into fourth place. Amy Barefield swam an NCAAB provisional qualifying time in the 50 free at 23.46. Barefield was also a part of the 200 free relay team with Alison McInturff, Jamie Trapp and Meghan Demchuk finishing fourth with a time of 1:35.36. Marta Stepanczuk added a third-place finish in the 500 free as she touched in at 4:54.61. Jamie Trapp came in sixth in the 200 IM with a time of 2:06.87. "We swam back into contention today and look forward to climbing the ladder the next two days," adds Litzinger.
Four-time defending conference champion BYU leads the men's and women's field with 305 and 251 points, respectively. Utah trails the Cougars in men's action with 280 points, followed by Air Force (225), UNLV (221) and Wyoming (186). The Rams hold the No. 2 spot in the women's events with 231 points, followed by UNLV (204), Utah (180), New Mexico (136), Wyoming (130), Air Force (106) and San Diego State (90).
Day three events will begin Friday, Feb. 20, with preliminary events at 10 a.m. CST and finals competition at 6 p.m. The MWC Swimming & Diving Championships conclude Saturday, Feb. 22, following the 6 p.m. finals events and the announcement of the individual and team awards.
