COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The University of Utah indoor track and field teams finished the final day of competition for the 2004 Mountain West Conference Championships on Saturday, Feb. 28. After three days of competition, the four-time defending conference champion BYU women's team and the BYU men's team captured conference titles.
Utah's women's team finished fifth with 67 points while the men finished sixth with 10 points. Utah's 67 is a school record for total points scored in a conference meet. The Utes also had a record number of athletes scoring in the meet. Out of 22 athletes on the women's team, 14 contributed points.
After finishing first in the preliminaries, Nellie Hammons took gold in the 800m finishing in 2:12.44. Hammons is Utah's only conference champion for the indoor season. Katie Decker finished third in the high jump with 1.70m while freshmen Jennie Haertel finished fifth in the mile race with 5:17.42.
The women's 4x400m relay team consisting of Hammons, Andrea Davidson, Jen Jackman and Amanda Feigt ran a great race finishing third overall (3:50.51). Nephi Tyler led the men's team taking fifth in the mile run with (4:16.54).
"This was one of Utah's strongest showings ever at a conference meet," states Head Coach Lisa Archer. "Some of our most impressive performances came from young athletes like Amanda Feigt, Becky Riddle and Jennie Heartel. With such great young athletes, our team should continue to improve for the future."
