SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's tennis team lost its first conference match to rival No. 20 BYU 7-0 at the Eccles Tennis Center.
The Cougars dominated the Utes in doubles play. Senior Sheri Esrock and freshman Cinthia Saucedo teamed up at the No. 1 and fell to Macfarlane and Zahnova (8-4). At the No. 2, freshmen Whitney Eber and Jessica Watts were downed by Pike and Holden (8-1) and senior Rachel Alder and sophomore Jenessa Jackson were blasted by Boulytcheva and Schneider at the No. 3 (8-2).
In singles play, the Utes fared well but did not manage to pick up any wins. At the No. 1, Esrock lost (6-1, 6-1) to Zahnvoa and Eber was dropped by Holden (7-5, 6-2) at the No. 2. The middle of the lineup felt the same sting as Saucedo was crushed by Jones (6-4, 6-4) at the No. 3 and Watts was crushed by Pike (6-3, 6-0) at the No. 4. The Cougars outplayed the Utes at the No. 5 and 6 positions as well when Jackson lost to Macfarlane (6-3, 6-4) at the No. 5 and Alder to Schneider at the No. 6 (6-3, 7-6(5)).
Head coach Megan Dorny comments on the match:"Aside from the doubles, we competed well as a team today. We really picked up our play during the singles portion of the match, after playing tentatively and intimidated in the doubles. As you can see from the results, we were in at the #2, 3, 5, and 6 spots today with a couple of points making the difference in a number of those sets. In the future, I hope we can turn some of our opportunities to win into wins."
"The month of March brings a lot of travel and the beginning of our outdoor season. we be playing mostly ranked teams in March, so if we play well on the road this could be a really big boost to send us into conference play."
