SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah ski team swept the alpine Skier of the Week category, taking home both the men's and women's honors. Junior skiers Rowena Hyldahl and Ben Thornhill have been named RMISA Skiers of the Week after the WSC/Regional Invitational last weekend in Crested Butte, Colo. This is the second such award for Hyldahl and first for Thornhill.
Hyldahl was honored after skiing fourth in the women's giant slalom with a time of 1:17.14 at the NCAA West Regional. The Cooma, Australia, native also added a season best sixth-place finish in 1:21.85 in the slalom event.
Last season, Hyldahl rallied to a third-place finish in the GS and grabbed ninth in the SL at the 2003 NCAA National Championships. She received first-team All-American honors at the NCAAs, ranking seventh in the GS and 11th overall by the Western Regional rankings.
Thornhill marked a season-best in both the men's giant slalom and slalom events. The Whistler, British Columbia, Canada, native won the GS event in 2:23.40 and boasted a fifth-place finish in the SL with a time of 1:12.10.
Last year, he won the GS and finished 17th in the SL at the 2003 NCAA National Championships, earning first-team All-American honors.
"It is fantastic to see Ben and Rowena perform as well as they did at the Regional Championships," said Head Coach Kevin Sweeney. "They are team leaders and their solid performances has the rest of the team very motivated for the upcoming NCAA Championships. This is perfect timing for the Utes."
