Utah Head Coach Elaine Elliott
Opening Statement
"We are pleased that we got the first game. It was well played on both sides and competitive and that is what you expect come tournament time."
On Rebounding Advantage
"We have to give ourselves second chances. I think it is critical that whenever you go against the zone you have to really get to the glass. It is an important part of your offense instead of just an afterthought. We played with intensity in that area.
On Kim Smith
"She's just a relentless player. She is going to go get her boards and she scores in different ways. Anybody who can get to the post and slash and get to the free-throw line has a lot of ways to hurt people."
San Diego State Head Coach Jim Tomey
On Utah's performance
First of all, congratulate Utah. They are a fine team, a veteran team and they play well together. When it gets a little sticky for them, they have the ability to un-stick themselves. They played well. Our team fought hard and we have a lot of areas to improve on and I think they know that.
On SDSU's peformance
But I was pleased in the second half. We made a couple runs at them. We cut it to five about twice and really had them 10 or 11 points most of the second half. I hated to see it slip to the total that it slipped to in the last two minutes. We have some young players who are getting better with every game and gaining confidence. We're trying to build a program and it's going to take a little time. We're pleased with the growth and we have to continue to get better.
On SDSU's size
We need to get some size, but we need to be technically better too. If you don't have the size, you better have the heart as big as this arena. We didn't do that enough. Their players pursued the ball better than we did. Ultimately, it crushed us. In a game that could have been a lot closer, it slipped away from us in that area. Size has something to do with it, but technique, toughness and heart are really what gets it done, but we didn't have enough of it tonight."
Utah Sophomore Forward Kim Smith
On her offensive game
"My shot was falling tonight and that was nice. Offensively, they played a zone, so you just had to cut to the gaps and my teammates did a good job of getting me the ball."

ON YOUR SEASON
I think the experience and learning each game and growing into a better player during the season was a huge gift. I couldn't have asked for a better experience this year, playing at this level with that much time.
ON DEFENDING FOR A LONG TIME AND LOSING A REBOUND
It was frustrating, and we knew coming into this game the two things we talked about were turnovers and rebounds. If you want to stay in a competitive game you have to rebound, with the lack of size we have that's how you win games. You have to rebound, you can't give up second shots over and over, those are missed opportunities for you to have possessions on the other side of the floor.

ON THE SEASON
With all the minutes that we've had, next year, we'll be able to have that experience and step up and be leaders for the girls coming in and know exactly what to do in different situations. Most freshmen in the Mountain West Conference or in any conference don't get the opportunity that we've had and I think in the long run its just going to make us better players.
ON DEFENDING FOR A LONG TIME AND LOSING A REBOUND
It just kinds of deteriorates on us because we defend for a full minute and it gets tiring and mentally we start breaking down. That's something we have to work on and get better at for next year."
