STOCKTON, Calif. - The Utah baseball team out-hit the University of Pacific 14-9, but stranded 11 runners and gave up three runs in the seventh and eighth innings in a 5-4 loss to the Tigers. With the loss, the Utes fall to 4-9 on the year.
Freshman Travis Kohn suffered the loss on the mound, falling to 1-2 on the year. Utah's starter, sophomore Jason Price, gave up four runs on eight hits. He struck out 10 and walked just one in 7.1 innings pitched.
Utah fell behind early, as the Tigers scored on a one-run single in the bottom of the first.
The Utes tied it at one apiece in the top of the second when freshman TJ Floyd doubled to left field, bringing in a run.
Pacific answered in the bottom of the second on an RBI-single, taking a 2-1 lead.
In the top of the third, Utah plated three runs, on a pair of singles.
After 3 1/2 scoreless innings, Pacific scored one run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly and two in the eighth on a triple and a base hit for the 5-4 win.
Six Utes had multi-hit games, led by Floyd, who went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Senior Michael Westfall, Jr. went 2-for-5 with two RBI, while junior Tyson Olson was 2-for-5 with one run driven in. Senior Jared Pena and juniors Matt Ciaramella and Trevor Eastman each had two hits on the game for Utah. Senior Eric Chevalier, who pinch hit, was 1-for-1 on the game.
