THIS WEEK:
The Utah track and field team will compete in the BYU Invitational in Provo, Utah. Taking place at the BYU Outdoor Track and Field Complex, competition will kickoff on Friday, April 3 with the women's hammer throw at 11:00 a.m. (MT).
Results will be posted throughout the day on www.byucougars.com.
QUOTING HEAD COACH Lisa Archer:
"The opening meet was a great way to kick off our outdoor season," states Archer. "It showed that we are strong in several events. We are looking forward to competing in Provo this weekend."
LAST MEET:
The University of Utah outdoor track and field teams finished competition for the Hornet Invitational on Saturday, March 27. Held at Sacramento State's Hornet Stadium, the meet featured athletes from Brigham Young, Chico State, Sacramento State and UC-Davis. Utah had a great meet taking gold in seven events.
Leading the way for the women were Vanessa Mortensen, Tracy Hamblin, Jen Jackman and Jennie Haertel who all notched first-place finishes in their respective events. Mortensen won the hammer throw with a distance of 53.18m. Hamblin took home gold in the pole vault, jumping 3.80m. Jackman won the 400m-hurdles with an impressive time of 61.07, and newcomer Haertel won the steeplechase with 11:38.49. Haertel also finished fourth in the 1,500m with 4:41.96.
The women's team also got strong performances from Katie Decker, Amanda Feigt and the 4x400 meter relay team. Decker finished third in the high jump with a height of 1.63m, while Feigt finished third in the long jump with 6.02m. The 4x400 meter relay team consisting of Nellie Hammons, Jen Jackman, Amanda Feigt and Andrea Davidson finished second with a 3:51.40 mark.
On the men's side, veterans Delfino Arevalo, Jeff Davidson and Nephi Tyler led the way. Tyler had an impressive meet taking gold in the 1,500m (3:57.34). Arevalo placed first in the 5,000m with 14:33.19, and Davidson won the steeplechase with 9:32.95.
UTES ON THE RUN:
Senior Tracy Hamblin kicked off the outdoor season with a strong performance at the Hornet Invitational. Hamblin won the pole vault jumping 3.80m and qualifying for the NCAA Regional meet. Her mark is a new personal record and ranks third on Utah's Top Ten List. She currently ranks first in the Mountain West Conference in the pole vault.
Senior Delfino Arevalo competed well in both the 5,000m and the 1,500m at the Hornet Invitational last weekend. Arevalo took home gold in the 5,000m with a time of 14:33.19 and finished behind Utah's Nephi Tyler for second place in the 1,500m (3:58.54). Arevalo ranks second in the 5,000m and ninth in the 1,500m.
MIGHTY FROSH:
Amanda Feigt had an outstanding meet last weekend dabbling in several different events. Feigt finished third in the triple jump and long jump, ninth in the 100m and 16th in the 200m. She also competed on the 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams that finished seventh and second respectively.
Feigt's mark in the long jump (6.02m) ranks second on Utah's Top Ten List and qualified her for the NCAA Regional meet. Her mark in the triple jump (12.20m) ranks second on Utah's Top Ten List. She currently ranks second in the conference for the long jump and third in the triple jump.
UPCOMING EVENTS:
The Utes will split up competition sites next weekend. Utah will compete in the Azusa Invitational, in Azusa, Calif., and the San Diego State Invitational in San Diego, Calif. Both meets will kick off competition on Saturday, April 10.
