EUGENE, Ore. - The University of Utah outdoor track and field teams finished competition for the Oregon Invitational on Saturday, April 24. Held at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field, the meet featured athletes from Utah, Oregon, Portland, Washington, Northern Arizona, Boise State and Weber State.
Leading the way for the women were Jennifer Kaplar, Jen Jackman and Jennie Haertel, who all notched first-place finishes in their respective events. Jackman took gold in the twilight 400-meter hurdles (60.71) and finished second in the 100-meter hurdles (14.29), a new personal record. Kaplar won the morning 100m-hurdles with 14.77, a new personal record, and finished ninth in the 400m-hurdles (1:06.82). Haertel had another great meet, taking gold in the morning 1,500 meters (4:27.69) and ninth in the 800 meters (2:16.89). Haertel had personal records in both events and set an NCAA regional qualifying mark in the 1,500.
Becky Riddle had an impressive performance in the discus, finishing fifth overall. Her distance of 45.79m is not only a new personal record, but also a school record. Freshmen pole vaulters Susan Atwater and Mandie Rowell continued to impress by finishing second (3.65m) and third (3.45m), respectively, in the morning pole vault competition.
The women's team also got strong performances from seniors Katie Decker and Nellie Hammons, who both notched second-place finishes in their events. Decker finished second in the high jump (1.73m) and Hammons finished second in the 800m (2:10.57)
On the men's side, Matt Hansen and Nephi Tyler led the way. Tyler finished seventh in the twilight 1,500 with 3:49.92, and Hansen finished 21st in the morning 5,000 meters with 15:11.58, a new personal record.
"We were prepared for this meet and it showed," states Head Coach Lisa Archer. "We got a lot personal records and the team was very competitive. The team had an excellent meet and will be ready for the conference championships."
