THIS WEEK:
The Utes will split travel to Provo this weekend for the BYU Wells Fargo Invitational. Competition will kick off on Friday, April 30 and continue through Saturday, May 1. The meet will be held at the BYU Track and Field Stadium.
Complete results for the BYU Wells Fargo Invitational will be posted at www.byutrack.com.
QUOTING HEAD COACH Lisa Archer:
"Jennie Haertel continues to be the biggest surprise of the season," states Archer. "She has a lot of guts and continues to race as hard as she can. She gets better and better each week. Those who already set NCAA qualifying marks will not compete at BYU. Instead they will train. The rest will attempt to set NCAA qualifying marks."
LAST MEET:
The University of Utah outdoor track and field teams finished competition for the Oregon Invitational on Saturday, April 24. Held at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field, the meet featured athletes from Utah, Oregon, Portland, Washington, Northern Arizona, Boise State and Weber State.
Leading the way for the women were Jennifer Kaplar, Jen Jackman and Jennie Haertel, who all notched first-place finishes in their respective events. Jackman took gold in the twilight 400-meter hurdles (60.71) and finished second in the 100-meter hurdles (14.29), a new personal record. Kaplar won the morning 100m-hurdles with 14.77, a new personal record, and finished ninth in the 400m-hurdles (1:06.82). Haertel had another great meet, taking gold in the morning 1,500 meters (4:27.69) and ninth in the 800 meters (2:16.89). Haertel had personal records in both events and set an NCAA regional qualifying mark in the 1,500.
Becky Riddle had an impressive performance in the discus, finishing fifth overall. Her distance of 45.79m is not only a new personal record but also a school record. Freshmen pole vaulters Susan Atwater and Mandie Rowell continued to impress by finishing second (3.65m) and third (3.45m), respectively, in the morning pole vault competition.
The women's team also got strong performances from seniors Katie Decker and Nellie Hammons, who both notched second-place finishes in their events. Decker finished second in the high jump (1.73m) and Hammons finished second in the 800m (2:10.57).
On the men's side, Matt Hansen and Nephi Tyler led the way. Tyler finished seventh in the twilight 1,500 with 3:49.92, and Hansen finished 21st in the morning 5,000 meters with 15:11.58, a new personal record.
"We were prepared for this meet and it showed," states Head Coach Lisa Archer. "We got a lot personal records and the team was very competitive. The team had an excellent meet and will be ready for the conference championships."
UTES ON THE RUN:
Becky Riddle has become Utah's All-Time best athlete in the discus. Last weekend she beat former Ute Shanna Nielson's school record of 45.30m by almost half a meter. Riddle's mark currently ranks 10th in the conference and will look to break her own record at the Wells Fargo Invitational.
Freshmen Jennifer Kaplar has come on strong in the past few weeks. She had her most impressive performance as a Ute last week at the Oregon Invitational where she set a new personal record in the 100m-hurldes (14.77). Kaplar moved her ranking up to 13th in the conference and will compliment junior Jen Jackman as a strong hurdling duo at the conference championships.
MIGHTY FROSH:
Freshmen pole vaulters Susan Atwater and Mandie Rowell continue to anchor Utah's pole vaulting team. Last weekend, they finished second and third, respectively, at the Oregon Invitational. Atwater's mark is a new personal record while Rowell tied her previous record. With the injury to start pole vaulter Tracy Hamblin, the freshmen duo have proved that the vaulting lineup will continue to compete for the gold.
Jennie Haertel set a new personal record in the 1,500 (4:27.69) at the Oregon Invitational. Her mark also ranks third on Utah's All-Time list and is an NCAA regional qualifying mark. Haertel will look for another impressive 1,500 performance at next month's Mountain West Conference Championships.
