SALT LAKE CITY - Utah center fielder Matt Ciaramella, a junior from Skyline High School in Salt Lake City, has been named to the Academic All-District VIII Baseball Team. He now advances to the national ballot, the results of which will be announced on Tuesday, June 1. Ciaramella boasts a 3.52 grade-point average as a business major.
Ciaramella currently leads the team in at bats, runs, hits, doubles, home runs, RBI, slugging percentage and walks, and is second in batting average and stolen bases. He also leads the Mountain West Conference in doubles, and ranks second in home runs, slugging percentage and total bases, third in RBI and sacrifice flies, sixth in hits, and ninth in batting average, runs and walks.
Ciaramella is currently two away from the Utah single-season doubles record (26) and three away from the career record (60). The MWC Player of the Week for April 19-25, he ranks sixth nationally with 0.48 doubles per game.
As a sophomore, Ciaramella was a first-team all-MWC pick after leading the team in games played, at bats, runs, hits, doubles, RBI and total bases, and ranking second in the MWC in batting average and on-base percentage, third in runs, fifth in hits, seventh in total bases, and 10th in both slugging percentage and RBI.
As a freshman, Ciaramella started 50 games and ranked third on the team in batting average. He was named to the 2002 MWC all-tournament team.
Ciaramella was a 2003 first-team Academic All-District pick. He is a two-time MWC Scholar Athlete and has twice been named to the MWC All-Academic team. Ciaramella has also been named to Athletics Department Honor Roll every semester.
