SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah pitching staff gave up 16 hits and eight walks en route to an 18-2 defeat at the hands of San Diego State at Franklin Covey Field this afternoon. With the loss, the Utes fall to 21-34 overall and 11-19 in Mountain West Conference play.
Senior Ben Buck (6-4) suffered the loss on the mound, pitching 4.1 innings. He gave up 11 runs on eight hits, while walking five and striking out three.
The Aztecs took a 4-0 lead in the top of the second on a three-run long ball, immediately followed by a solo homer.
After a run in the fourth on an RBI-single, San Diego State broke out in the fifth, plating seven runs on three hits and three runs to take a 12-0 lead.
Utah scored its first run in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI-double by junior Matt Ciaramella. The Utes added another run in the bottom of the seventh on another Ciaramella double, his 27th of the season, a new Utah record.
The Aztecs added two runs in the eighth and four more in the ninth for the 18-2 final.
Ciaramella had a big day offensively, going 4-for-5 and driving in Utah's two runs. Freshman Jay Brossman was 3-for-5 with two runs scored.

Utah will be the No. 5 seed at the MWC Tournament next Wednesday-Saturday, May 26-29, at UNLV, and will face No. 4-seed Brigham Young in the first round.
