LAS VEGAS - San Diego State's Scott Shoemaker, the Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Year, pitched a complete-game three-hit shutout as the Aztecs defeated Utah 8-0 in day two of the MWC Championship this afternoon.
Junior Doug Mackay (4-9) suffered the loss on the mound, throwing six innings. He gave up four runs on five hits, while striking out six and walking three.
After four and a half innings of hitless baseball, San Diego State got on the board in the bottom of the fifth with a solo homer. The Aztecs added three more in the sixth on a sacrifice fly and a two-run double to go up 4-0.
In the seventh, SDSU put the game away with four more runs on five hits, including a two-run long ball, for the 8-0 final score.
Utah's three hits came from juniors Matt Ciaramella and Trevor Eastman and sophomore Ryan Khoury.
