NORTHRIDGE, Calif - Several athletes from the University of Utah outdoor track and field teams finished the first day of competition for the 2004 Western Regional NCAA Championships on Friday, May 28. The top five athletes in each event qualified for nest month's NCAA Championship meet. Utah's Vanessa Mortensen qualified in the hammer by finishing fifth (59.52m) overall.
Utah got several impressive performances in the preliminary events. Jen Jackman, Nellie Hammons, and Nephi Tyler all qualified for the final race in their respective event. Jackman finished eighth (59.51) in the 400-meter hurdles. Her mark is not only a new personal record, but also a school record. Hammons finished third in the 800 with 2:07.26, and Tyler finished ninth in the 1,500 with 3:45.50.
"Our athletes did a great job," states Head Coach Lisa Archer. "We're a looking forward to tomorrow's events where we have three runners and a high jumper competing in their final events. Our freshmen Jennie Haertel and Amanda Feigt got some great experience today. They were excited and a little nervous, but it was their first time competing in a meet of this magnitude"
