SALT LAKE CITY - Utah center fielder Matt Ciaramella, a junior from Skyline High School in Salt Lake City, has been named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Baseball Team. Ciaramella is a third-team selection with a 3.52 grade-point average as a business major.
Ciaramella led the Utes this season in games played, at bats, runs, hits, doubles, home runs, RBI, total bases and slugging percentage, and was second in batting average, walks, on-base percentage, sacrifice flies and stolen bases. He also led the Mountain West Conference in doubles, and ranked second in total bases and slugging percentage, third in home runs, RBI, sacrifice flies and at bats, fourth in hits, and seventh in batting average.
Ciaramella set new Utah single-season and career doubles records with 28 and 61, respectively. The MWC Player of the Week for April 19-25, he ranks third nationally with 0.48 doubles per game.
Ciaramella was a 2003 first-team Academic All-District pick. He is a two-time MWC Scholar Athlete and has twice been named to the MWC All-Academic team. Ciaramella has also been named to Athletics Department Honor Roll every semester.
