Utah Track Concludes NCAA Outdoor Championships

AUSTIN, Texas - Utah track and field team members Vanessa Mortensen, Nellie Hammons and Delfino Arevalo all competed on Thursday at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Mortensen finished 14th (58.88m) in the preliminary hammer throw event, barely missing the finals in which the top 12 athletes advance to. However, Mortensen came into the NCAA championships ranked 23rd in the nation so her 14th-place finish is an impressive improvement upon her previous national ranking.

Hammons finished 23rd (2:10.09) in the preliminaries of the 800-meter race, but failed to qualify for the finals.

Arevalo finished 24th in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 32:15.06. He posted a 29:06.60 finish in the 10K earlier this year.

"Vanessa performed extremely well for her first NCAA Championship Meet," stated Head Coach Lisa Archer. "She dramatically improved her ranking and in order to advance to the finals she would've had to set another school record in the hammer. Unfortunately Nellie struggled in the 800 after the weather delayed her event. Delfino also struggled in the 10K. He started off strong, but fell behind towards the end of the race. We are looking forward to his senior year next season, and hopefully this will be a learning experience. "

Hammons and Mortensen earned berths to the championships after finishing fifth or better at the NCAA West Regional in Northridge, Calif., last month. Hammons placed fourth in the 800-meter run with a new school record time of 2 minutes 6.67 seconds. Mortensen took fifth in the hammer throw with a heave of 59.52 meters on her third shot. Arevalo earned the berth by setting a qualifying time in the 10,000 earlier this year. The 10,000 is uncontested at the region level so the qualifying time was for the NCAA Championships.
