Utah Track Finishes NCAA Western Regional

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Several athletes from the University of Utah outdoor track and field teams finished the final day of competition for the 2004 NCAA Western Regional Championships on Saturday, May 29. The top five athletes in each event qualified for next month's NCAA Championship meet.

Utah's Nellie Hammons qualified in the 800 meters (2:06.97) by finishing fourth overall. Her mark is not only a new personal record, but also a school record. Hammons joins Vannessa Mortensen, who qualified yesterday in the hammer, and Delfino Arevalo, who already set an NCAA qualifying time in the 10,000, as Utes headed to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Though Utah had no other NCAA qualifiers today, it still had stellar performance from Jen Jackman and Nephi Tyler. Jackman finished eighth in the 400-meter hurdles with 59.64, her second fastest time ever. Tyler had another great performance in the 1,500 meter, finishing ninth (3:50.50).

"It was a very exciting day," states Head Coach Lisa Archer. "Our athletes performed at a very high level throughout the entire meet. Nellie Hammons and Vanessa Mortensen really stepped it up for this meet. We're excited to have them join Delfino Arevalo at the NCAA Championship meet."
