SALT LAKE CITY -- University of Utah middle blocker Lori Baird won Mountain West Conference Player of the Week honors in leading the Utes to two key conference victories last weekend.
The 6-2 freshman led all Utes in hitting .438 over the two matches. She also turned in averages 3.57 kills and 1.71 blocks per game in guiding the Utes to wins over UNLV and San Diego State. The two conference victories enabled Utah to leapfrog from fifth to third in the conference standings.
Her best effort came in the four-game win over San Diego State. She hit .481 against the Aztecs and tallied a career-high-tying 14 kills. She also had nine total blocks and four digs. In the three-game win over UNLV, she hit a team-best .381 in collecting 11 kills and three blocks.
Baird is the third Ute spiker to garner the weekly award as the MWC honored teammates Airial Salvo and Shelly Sommerfeldt earlier this year.
The team returns to action this weekend when it plays TCU in Fort Worth, Texas, on Saturday, Oct. 29. The match is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
