SALT LAKE CITY - Junior Amber Walter won the 50 free with a time of 23.91 seconds, and the 100 free in 52.23 seconds to help the Utes beat San Diego State 140-95 Friday night at Ute Natatorium. The Utes won 10 of 13 events to improve to 2-1 overall, and 1-0 in the MWC. San Diego State drops to 0-2 on the season, and 0-2 in the MWC.
Walter also competed on the 200 medley relay team with Leah Jensen, Jennifer Fredsall and Amy Barefield that finished in 1 minute, 46.84 seconds to take top honors in the event. Junior Alison McInturff posted individual wins in the 200 IM and the 100 fly. McInturff won the 200 IM with a time of 2 minutes, 09.69 seconds and the 100 fly in 58.39 seconds.
Utah's third two-event winner, junior Kelsey Patterson, won both diving events for the second straight meet. Patterson tallied 290.70 points to claim top honors in the 1-meter event, beating out fellow Ute Anna Braszkewiecz who tallied 270.45 points in the 1-meter event. In the 3-meter board, Patterson scored 359.62 points to finish first, while Braszkewiecz scored 273.37 points to finish second in the event.
Rachael Curci won the 1000 free, finishing in 10 minutes, 28.51 seconds, while sophomore Adrienne Coburn finished second with a time of 10 minutes, 43.74 seconds. Freshman Shannon McQueen won her first individual event of the year, the 500 free, posting a time of 5 minutes, 08.03 seconds. McQueen also finished second in the 200 IM with a time of 2 minutes, 11.99 seconds.
Senior Ariane Kich won the 100 breast with a time of 1 minutes, 07.36 seconds, while Coburn finished third (1:08.73). Barefield placed second in the 50 free with a time of 24.62 seconds, Marissa Martin finished second in the 100 back (1:00.10) and Fredsall placed second in the 200 free (1:56.02) and third in the 100 free (54.42).
"It was good evening of racing," said Head Coach Michael Litzinger. "We had a chance to swim some events that we normally don't swim, but now our focus has to quickly shift to tomorrow's meet with UNLV."
Both Utah teams take on the Runnin' Rebels of UNLV at noon tomorrow in Ute Natatorium.
