Nov. 18, 2005
Utah Head Coach Ray Giacoletti
On where the team is: "We were probably very fortunate to walk away with a win. From the first exhibition game to the second, we got better. From the second exhibition to tonight, we didn't get better. We probably need to do a better job of identifying roles. On the other hand, I thought the young kids did a great job. Our freshman, we threw them to the wolves. Johnnie (Bryant) played his first major college basketball game. Sean (Green), Luke (Nevill), LB (Lawrence Borha), those guys were solid. Bryant (Markson) was not real good early, but came back and got it together. It's the little things. Just guarding people, boxing out, and rebounding the basketball. I told them afterwards, if you're confused and want to find a role, that's your role."
On Johnnie Bryant: "He's going be a good player. He understands what we want. That's where we're at right now in the process."
On the next game: "We're going to take a day off tomorrow, then we have two days after that to try to get ourselves better for Rhode Island on Tuesday. So we've got a measuring stick for where we're at, some film to watch, a real situation against a very athletic team, and try to get better by Tuesday."
On the turnovers: "There's no excuse, sorry. You can control that, that's effort. We talk about it all the time, `Focus the things you can control.' After that, you can't worry about it anymore."
Utah Forward Bryant Markson
On the start of the game: "I was ready for the game, but I came in and was just trying to over-force things. I was trying to make plays when they weren't supposed to be made right at that time."
On overall team effort: First half, we stunk basically. Second half we came back and played defense. We played good in the second half, so it was alright."
What to work on before Tuesday: "Getting tough mentally and physically. Get prepared to come out and play defense. We need to fix our defense."
Utah Guard Tim Drisdom
On the game: "It was a typical first game. The exhibition games really don't do justice to get you ready for your first real game. We had some turnovers to start the game, stuff that is easy to correct, which is the nice thing about it. We need get to the basic defense and rebound.
On the turnovers: "We need to be strong with the ball. We need to break up the pressure from the other team."
On his performance: "I need to shoot the ball when I'm open. The first half I didn't get that many looks. The second half I started to put my moves on. I'm a good shooter, and I wait to shoot it when I'm open."
