LAS VEGAS - The University of Utah volleyball team capped off its 19-win regular season with two all-conference nods and with the Mountain West Conference Freshman of the Year tally.
Freshman outside hitter Airial Salvo collected two awards in garnering both all-conference and Freshman of the Year accolades. Senior outside Shelly Sommerfeldt earned her third straight all-conference selection.
Salvo averaged 3.36 kills, 2.58 digs and 0.90 blocks per game during the conference season. Her kills-per-game average is the new conference standard as she turned in the best numbers ever by a MWC freshman. She also hit .237 and ranked second in hitting among the outside hitters on the team. She led all conference players in kills per game, tallying double-digit kills in all but three of the 16 league matches.
Sommerfeldt wins all-MWC honors for the third time in ranking among the top hitters in the league this season. She averaged a team-high 3.58 kills and added 3.06 digs and 0.85 blocks per game. She had double-digit kills in 13 conference matches, nine of which were double-doubles. The outside hitter had three 20-kill matches, including a career-high 24 kills and a career-high-tying 20 digs against San Diego State (11/19).
Joining Salvo and Sommerfeldt on the all-MWC team were: Casey Bauer, Dre Downs and Tess Rogers of Colorado State; Linsdey Noll of San Diego State; Maria Aladjova and Lauren Miramontes of UNLV; Rachel Smith of Wyoming; and Chelsea Goodman, Lindsy Hartsock and Erica Lott of Brigham Young.
Player of the Year honors went to Hartsock while Coach of the Year distinction fell upon BYU's Jason Watson.
The Utes traverse into the postseason on Thursday, Nov. 24, when they play Wyoming in the MWC Tournament semifinal. The match is being held in Las Vegas and will start at 11 a.m. (PST). All eight tournament matches, including the Utah-Wyoming semifinal, will be televised on CSTV.
