SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah volleyball team (22-8 overall) begins its eighth straight NCAA tournament appearance in familiar surroundings as it has won the bid to host the tournament first- and second-round matches this weekend.
Crimson Court will feature some of the best women's volleyball teams in the nation as the Utes begin the tournament when they host Loyola Marymount (19-10) on Friday, Dec. 2. First serve is set for 8 p.m. The first match of the day will feature the No. 4-seeded Arizona Wildcats (22-5) against Utah State (21-12). It will start at 6 p.m.
"It's awesome to be in the NCAAs and it's awesome that it's going to be at our place," head coach Beth Launiere said. "After I saw BYU got shipped to Los Angeles, I thought we'd have a chance to host. I didn't think the committee was going to send all three (Utah) teams out of state.
"It's very exciting to see the University of Utah get this bid. It's going be some exciting volleyball."
The winner of the first-round matches will meet in the second round at Crimson Court on Saturday, Dec.3, at 7 p.m.
The Utes got into the tournament by winning the Mountain West Conference's automatic bid. They swept both Wyoming and Colorado State to get to the conference championship. There, Utah brought down No. 21-ranked Brigham Young in four games to win it's third tournament title.
LMU plays in the West Coast Conference and received an at-large bid as it makes its third consecutive NCAA tournament appearance. The Lions finished the season 19-10 overall.
This is the second time that Utah has hosted the tournament. It also hosted in 2001, the year it made it to the Sweet 16.
Colorado State and BYU will also represent the Mountain West Conference in the field of 64 teams. Colorado State hosts first- and second-round action and begins the tourney against Colorado. BYU will venture to Los Angeles where it will play Pepperdine in its first match.
